It was the night before Sinterklaas, 5 December, when the children gathered round the fireplace. Their hearts pounding with excitement, because tonight old Sinterklaas was going to visit their homes bringing presents. Ever since the arrival in The Netherlands of Sinterklaas and his helpers ‘Zwarte Pieten’ by steamer from Spain, the children would be on their best behaviour. Every evening their rooms would be tidy and when they put their shoes in front of the fireplace they would be filled with hay or carrots for Sinterklaas’ horse. They loved the old saint but were a little afraid of Zwarte Piet. This was because Zwarte Piet kept a record of who was good and who was naughty in Sinterklaas’ big red book. If you had behaved really badly then Zwarte Piet could take you away in his bag to Spain and hold you there until you had learned to be good. Otherwise, he would give you a good spanking with his ‘roe’. Sinterklaas has many helpers, Navigation Piet, Poem Piet, Athletic Piet, Gift Piet etc. So, you will see many of them walking around The Netherlands.
The children’s mothers would make hot chocolate milk and fill the tables with all sorts of sweets traditional to this day, e.g. speculaas, pepernoten (ginger nuts), marzipan and taai taai (gingerbread men). The children would start to sing songs to welcome Sinterklaas, when suddenly their hearts would skip a beat. A loud pounding on the door would stop their singing and they would run quickly to the door to catch a glimpse of Sinterklaas. However, when they opened the door there would be nothing to see. In the distance they could hear the sound of a galloping horse. Sinterklaas would already be off to the next house to bring presents. The children would stand there for a few minutes wondering about the old saint, when they would feel a cold breeze, look down and see a huge bag filled with gifts. They would quickly run inside the house to escape from the cold and to unpack the gifts brought by St. Nicholaas.
Nowadays, the fireplace is replaced by central heating, but the tradition of Sinterklaas is alive more than ever. Still, the young children believe in the existence of Sinterklaas and are looking forward to his arrival. From the moment Sinterklaas arrives in The Netherlands, the children are allowed to put out their shoes for Sinterklaas. Before they go to bed, they will sing traditional Sinterklaas songs and in the morning Sinterklaas would have left a small present or sweet in the shoe. Unless, you have been a naughty child, then Sinterklaas would put a bag of salt in the shoe.
